Nenahnezad Community School Brings Families Together with Basketball Tournament

April 21, 2025

Nenahnezad Community School hosted a high-energy family day on April 12, 2025, centered on a growing favorite, their 3-on-3 basketball league. The league wrapped up its season with a Saturday tournament that brought families and staff together for food, fun and friendly competition.

The basketball program, a wellness initiative funded by the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, introduced students in grades 3 through 6 to the unique structure of 3-on-3 play. Unlike traditional five-player basketball, this version features smaller teams, quicker games, and a different scoring system—one point for baskets inside the arc and two for long-range shots.

“It’s fun and offers something new and local,” said Principal Clifton O’Banion. “It's also aligned with our local sports league for elementary schools, The Four Directions.”

First grade teacher Shawn Valentine and education technician Lonna Harwood initiated the idea for the 3-on-3 league and volunteered their time to coach and mentor students throughout the season. Their teamwork and commitment helped create an inclusive environment where students learned new skills and built confidence on and off the court.

Family Day turned into a full celebration, complete with burgers and hot dogs grilled on site.

“Community and family engagement is one of the most important facets of a school’s success,” said O’Banion. “Events like this are a way to get people involved in the fun things first, and then they’re encouraged to take on more involved roles, like parent committees or school advisory groups.”

With momentum from this year’s league, the school plans to bring it back next year, likely with more teams and expanded participation. As Nenahnezad continues to foster a positive school culture, events like the 3-on-3 tournament help lay the foundation for deeper community connections.
